NON-TRADITIONAL FAREWELL SERVICE
Untitled Document
Traditionally,
funeral ceremonies have been derived from the various world religions
according to their own rites. But a religious service carried out for
someone who had no religious belief can be uncomfortable for those present.
As our society becomes increasingly secular (non-religious) the demand
for non-traditional funerals is on the increase as well. Current statistics
show that more than half the weddings celebrated do not take place in
a church.
Because there are
no standardized ceremonies among secular funerals, there are no guidelines
for the family planning such a service. Following are a few components
that could be included in the non-religious ceremony; families may wish
to use any one or all of the suggested components. This is only an outline,
and families are encouraged to use any creative ideas available from
family and friends.
It should be noted
that some organized secular and humanist groups provide guidelines for
the funeral ceremonies of one of their members. If the person being
honored has been a member of one of these organizations, the group should
be contacted.
Further, many religions
have become more open to allowing some secular rituals to be included
in their services. If any of the ideas presented in this section would
provide some meaning within an otherwise religious framework, the presiding
priest or minister can provide guidance on whether the idea is appropriate.
